Found a large ant colony in one of my large containers while removing plants. I wanted to reuse as much of the potting soil as possible. What would yall recommend I do?

I was pulling some of my jalapeño plants out of their container (towards the end of their season, I still have another four plants and don't know what to do with all the peppers) and when I went to pull the stumps out of the potting soil I discovered a swarm of small black ants scattering around about 6 inches beneath the soil. I should mention the plants they were under had a bit of an aphid infestation lately and I bet the ants were farming them.

My plan was to top of the container with fresh potting mix and plant a couple of broccoli seedlings in there, but I'm not sure what to do about the ants. Should I just throw everything out and put completely new potting mix in there, try to kill the ants off (how?) before topping off the planter and reusing it, or just leave the ants be?
