Zone 6B thinking about buying trees now but not planting until spring. Bad idea?

To keep this short, we are buying a new build and want to put cherry trees in the front yard. The house isn't finished and we probably won't close until the end of December or January. Home Depot has trees at 50% off now, and was debating buying them now, or maybe if they drop to 75% off, but was wondering what the chance of them surviving the winter still in the pots. Is it a bad idea? Anything to do to ensure survival until April/May?
