Best way to level stripped back paint with existing paint

I've been working on repainting my front door. Most of it was fine but there were a few sections that had been flaking badly. I stripped these bits back but it has left some places where there are gaps which are back to the wood next to original but decent condition paint.

How do I go about bringing those stripped back bits up to the same level as the original paint? (I'd like to get a nice even finish).

My plan at the moment is to just paint those bits with undercoat until they match and then carefully sand to even it all out. It just feels like it might take a good few coats of paint to do it.

Does that make sense or is there a better way?
